Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

The story is about a British espionage mission in Nazi occupied France during World War Two and there are two narrators – Julie Beaufort-Stuart and Maddie Brodatt. This coming-of-age narrative text. Consisting of two parts, the first part is a confession by Julie and because it is written for the enemy, von Linden, she is careful because the stakes are high, thus making her account highly suspect and hence making her an unreliable narrator. 

 

 

The second part is by Maddie which gives a completely different interpretation of what was recounted in Part 1. The story is rich in symbolism and there are numerous settings where the plot unfolds.

Elisabeth Wein who holds dual citizenship in USA and Britain is famed for her historical fiction for young adults. She is a amateur pilot and has a long-lasting fascination for planes. “Code Name Verity” written in 2012  was designated the Michael L Printz Award the following year.
